EVERY POEM IS A POEM OF HOPE
Your head
may be in the oven tomorrow
today you are still writing
Hear me! Help me!
with some belief the bottle
will get to shore in time
EVERY POEM IS A POEM OF HOPE

Hear me! Help me!

RAISING THE TITANIC
with gratitude to Dr. Joe
Remember when we were old
and used to spend all of our gold
on lotions and potions and medics galore
and every new fad at the health food store
Tar for the seams of a sinking ship
thinking we were near the end of the trip
But if time
is but a wrinkle in thought
just think of all that we’ve got
ON THE ROAD TO COMPASSION
Empathy, hell I ain’t got no empathy
sympathy maybe for you and for me
when the same thing happened that hurt
but maybe it happened to me once
and to you a hundred times
and I had someone to kiss it better and you don’t
and I can pretend, but I won’t
AND AIN’T WE ALL
Just
energy
slowed enough
to appear as matter
jelly-molded in the shape of story
HEMISPHERES
It is wet in Wellington
The kiss-curl on Dorsey’s forehead
now clockwise instead of counter
points to the other frontal lobe
As to what
is happening within
still dark continents to me
WAIRARAPA
The road
from Wellington
up into the Wairarapa
is a steep and winding road
through green as green as Irish envy
If you keep your eye
on the center line of the road
your breakfast may stay where you put it
If you look down
along the cliffs and crags
all the hardness wrapped in soft
to count the valley cows and sheep
your stomach will forgive you
tomorrow or the next day or the next
and you will always have today
MOONDUST IN THE FOOTPRINTS
for Jane on our fiftieth anniversary
Almost fifty years ago
Armstrong landed on the moon
He isn’t there now
but we celebrate it yet
And since
the past is not the past
but in the moment we remember
I remember
you and us
I remember
EXPANSION
Poetry is expanding
Like the universe
and God to contain it
So shout
whisper or whine
as long as you can
into that big blue balloon
