That almost every day
The laboring children can look out
And see the men at play

The Man in the Desert

The man in the desert remembers
and a tear begins to form

A tear so long unshed
ninety percent of the water is gone

Dragging its chain of crusted drops
it carves a white canyon
down his long and leathered face

A cracked tongue between cracked lips
reaches to taste it – Oh so sweet

The opulence, the opulence, the Art Deco decor
The richness of wood on every wall and stair
The length and height and ballroom beam
The lavish light of crystal chandelier

Here rich and famous of the day
were brushed against in passageway
Now Long Beach harbor final-moored
with ghosts of glint and glory at the bar

Yet all is there, save ocean swell and mal de mer

These two I bring in memory from home
a canoe on Candle Lake in a ski-boat's wake
and the back seat of dad's old car
