They’re taking up a collection
down at the city hall

Now you know what you can do
with all those big guns you bought
and were jonesing for a what for

Big trucks will be waiting
to haul them to the waiting planes

Bring gun belts, ammo, long clips too
and flags to wave of yellow and blue

It may not make the whole world safer
but people around here for pretty sure

It is not so simple

If you question every action
you will find forces pull in other directions

If you look in the mouth of the horse
not all teeth will be straight
and many may have been grinding
for some time

It is more likely
that happiness will be found
by looking deep in the mouth of the adage

There is a richness and a heaviness
in the words and gifts
There is the gold polished by the sand
heavy in the sluices
Pulling my hands upwards
against its weight

Santa carrying his full sack back
every chimney and all doors blocked

The rivers of the earth all dammed

Greeting card companies out of business

Chefs dying of the hunger to feed

not having the power of Jesus
to multiply the multitudes and
get rid of all that fish

Clothes that you have worn
for weddings, vacations, births and deaths
all the best days of your life and all the worst

When you give the gift, your friend says
“Thank you, this is perfect
it is sometimes very cold
where I am living at present
and this will get me through the winter”

Because Gloria needed a new word
for those brief shining moments

A word for when the fox was looking over
her shoulder as she sketched in the woods
A word for when the pure white horse
trailing black reins came thundering
past her and a friend on a snow white day
For the sunsets that cover the whole sky
double rainbows when grandmothers die
and a circular rainbow that held you and I
Sheet lighting eating its tail in a circle
Northern lights that start at a point over your head and shower all around you
For the magic of weaving our bracelets when we need a reminder of magic in each of our lives and each other
Because of all this, it is now your word too

the folly
of throwing
a word against a mountain

The beaver does not bother
to stop his building long enough
to slap his tail and dive

The black bear ambles unconcerned
along the flowered motorway
across from the great glacier

You want to be, at least for a day
that mountain goat
hanging impossibly on the slope

I want to be the bighorn sheep
that just passed four feet away
the one with the biggest horns
