The Albums

Mother's shrinkage was marked by domicile

House, apartment, retirement and nursing home
shedding at each move, furniture, china, and art
except for, and never, the old photo albums
heavy in padded leather brown and green

Each visit when conversation stuttered to a stall
(Religion all but Baptist drowned and what use is weather without crops)
out would come the albums
and in we all would dive
for pennies bright and shiny
at the bottom of the pool

There's a family always laughing
There are girls and they're all smiling

There's a collie dog a roaming
chasing gophers down their holes

There's a ranch with grass all greening fifteen minutes after rain

that will be fed by Sharon's ashes.

Circling the Square

The old towns in South Texas
have a town square that all life circles around

One sees it also in Mexico and Spain
but that was where I saw them first
and an instant home ness rose

In the small towns of Saskatchewan
where I was born and raised
there was only a Main Street
and that was only always a road out of town

Train Day

Once a week, once a week
they came from all around
and swelled and swelled
the size of our young town

And the chugging grew, and the chugging grew
and the chugging grew, and the whistle blew
and all was new, and the children knew

But now the lines are down, all down
old folks and old dogs in the town
not a child nor a pup, nor a pup
and not one elevator up
