Twenty after midnight and up alone
sharing every Christmas past
with the angel of Austin present
alight on the well lit tree

Telling her of the first thin pine
strung with popcorn and candles clipped
back on the ranch before the power

Every crackle of every log
every crinkle of tissue torn
every child's first Christmas
and every parent's last
and every cousin and uncle and aunt
no longer as they say extant

Praying her to spread
her wings and wonder wide
that we may gather them all by dawn

Two months short
of a hundred and five
she too the upward dive

You can read about her in her books
and some good hints on living yours

At an Austin church we got to touch
a shawl Gandhi gave her doctor parents
when they ministered on Himalayan slopes

Never washed you can still grok Gandhi on it

Her son Bob has a Human Potential Center
where we had a small group dinner later
and she and me washing and drying
shoulder to shoulder at the small sink after

The ordinary dancing with the extraordinary

and guttural-down in time
as we learn of hate and crime

always include an instrument in it

Our neighbors
have an oak tree as do we

A fence between
does not prevent their touching tenderly

No passports are required
No border guards stand guard

The bounds of their

Me and my brothers
had tractors and trucks and such
you can't talk to tractors and trucks

Sisters with in strollers
had friends always happy
to see the world through their eyes

My first teacher hated teaching
and wasn’t fond of students either
I’d show you the strap marks
on my hands but they’re all growed over

Our second teacher loved teaching
and specially me each of us thought

I love watching sunsets
with someone who loves watching sunsets
Love howling at the moon
with someone who loves howling at moons

I never asked but guess
my second teacher loved sunsets and moons
