With Ghosts

If I was ever alone, alone
I'd go hunting for a house with ghosts

They tend to derpress the real estate prices
and add little or nothing to grocery expenses

I'm always happy to hear anyone's stories
and they must have some doozies to share

They will extend the same courtesy to me
listening to my poetry endlessly and patiently
and groaning like you did at the groanier ones

Oh how we flail
when we're hurt and unheard

Surely we can find
somewhere anywhere to connect

One listening friend would be great
and, better yet, two or four or eight

When she is away
half the bed is covered in books

There are seven there now
not counting notebooks filled with
baby poems demanding 2am feedings

great bodies of work and much beloved
But happy enough to trade the space
for the warmer body of my beloved

Lately I've been feeling so empty
and more fragile than ever before

Everything that I believed in is gone

Desperate I turn
my jagged edges to the world

Step on me
with sensitive feet you will be sorry
with lumbering boots, I will be crushed

There are wolves
everywhere and closer

Your parents are busy flailing
at the snarling snouts and dripping fangs

Busy wrapping their own and each other's bloody wounds

While you curl up, cold and lonely
in the bottom of the sleigh
thinking, I'll die if someone
doesn't pick me up and hold me soon

Thinking of the children of Ukraine on the 1st anniversary of the Russian invasion

The Lonely Men

Their little dark houses still dotted the prairie when I was growing up
They all seemed to cling to the soil as if their life force had all been used up in the long and difficult transplanting, and they could hold on but no longer grow
Or they stood alone and surrounded by sadness and the small and smaller markers of what had fallen to the reaper's scythe

Their roots, loosened year after year
by the hot winds and the deep frosts
became more and more brittle
Until one by one they broke off
like tumbleweeds
and were gone

So many I used to send to you
so many times I still reach for a pen

Letters to Santa don't require an answer
through presents are often hoped for

So, maybe I could start writing again

They can put them in a sack with his
I already have the presents
