In Grandpa’s Cellar

Along the east wall a row
of large glass betteries
charged and recharged
by the windmill in the yard

Close by the many crocks
of the fruits of his garden
on their way to wine

I have been brought to halt
by a passing waft
of strong cheese and pipe tobacco

But never once or likely
the musky mix of ozone
and yeast at the bottom of those stairs

Past Translating Present

In her youth she'd been a Hitler Youth
filled with purpose and power
and the joy of pre-teen camaraderie

All now dimmed and damned wheen seen
through smoke from Auschwitz ovens
though somewhere in her still it shines
brightest diamond of her life

This was the story, or was it two
she sought my help to put to poem

That was thirty years ago
I might do a better job today
informed by watching rallies
filled with power hope and joy
and how it will look in their regret

Only in trucks the lowest gear
had a name that was not a steer

Anything you
wanted to haul up the steepest hill
Anything you wanted
to pull out of wherever it was stuck

Deep throated power in that sound
the mightiest beast for miles around

The candidate for emporor
had a suit of finest clothes
though his followers had none

Which he had pointed out
and promised to swiftly remedy
if they would vote him in again

A quiver is a place
for arrows for your bows

And a quiver is a shaking
in the fear of using those
