It is Enough

It is enough
that the baby smiles
even if it's only gas

It is enough
to know that God exists
though it take a lifetime
and a minute more

It is enough
that the dog loves you
at the end of a day filled
with cats

It is enough
that the rainbow
can arch your back
straight again

It is enough to watch a sunset

It is enough
that leaves fall like butterflies

It is enough
that joy exists, even when
others have it all

It is enough
that the other knee feels
fine

It is enough
that in dreams you can
still fly

Is is enough
that poetry is in the bible too

It is enough
that gifts come
in the size of gratitude

Why Now

Why now! Dad would say
when anything at all broke
in the middle of a busy day
of farming and ranching work

Wasn’t sure if he was mad
at the gods or at me (It felt like me)

No use to say that things break from use
and most often when you’re using them
it was personal affront in every case
purely intended to inconvenience him

Retired and attired
for an old friend’s birthday party
when the phone rang to say Canceled
because of the guest of honor’s sudden death

the parents they'll be born to

If this is so, and who's to say
it is honor and debt beyond repay

like a tree

Rooted to the ground I wait
for one to fly away
and free me up to flip a coin

Male birds dress in bright array
to sweep the lonesome girls away
Night-black crow in formal shine
to dignify the "Please be mine"
Parrot plumage easy seen
deep within the jungle green
While robin's red red breast
can incite the urge to nest
Magpie jesters there by half
if only you can make them laugh

uniforms always catch the most

what do you call a perfect drive
on the first at Banff Springs
that a big black bird beaks up and swifts away

He might drop the ball in the hole flying by
or you mighta had a rifle in. your bag that day

the scoring would, or should, come out the same
