Let it be again

There are, the epigeneticists say
memories that haven't gone away

What happened to
your grandma when the troops came by
is still barbed-wire wrapped around your DNA

Dreams that aren't yours
neurons firing like the war's still on
and mines set off by a word or a touch

So please be gentle with one another
and your mother and your mother's mother

After the news from the war

The lady in the dream
pulls her dead
husband's bed
closer

Gathers the bulky covers
to her embrace

And says...

I'm all fixed out if frame
I've built these useless stairs
it seems I'll need them again

So cold as to be almost reptilian

has become

Seems to be no end
in sight

Only in Russia poetry is respected -
- it gets people killed
Osip Mandelstam
To have that kind of respect
that blood in the inkwell courage
audience and self hanging on every word

And yet
still hoping for a last chapter shift
from Russian novel to American movie

The last possible moment rescue
by a beautiful spy
the happy-ever-after ending

In Search of Ukraine

A country to be a country
must have its heroes and its stories

One need not look past recent weeks
for a hero calling forth the hero in all

As for stories of stories I invite you
to the picture of Taras Schevchenko
In place of honor in most every home

Born into the slavery of serfdom
the skill of his art gained him freedom
a freedom which he also wished
for his family and for his country
and wrote verses to their worthiness

A step that won him ten years on the steppes
and a No pens or paper order from the Tsar

And still he wrote, and somehow shared
so that, on the banks of the Dnieper in 1861
his friend Mikhaylo Chaly could say in eulogy
The poetry of Shevchenco
has won for us the right of literary citizenship

Solidarity and support for Ukraine on the one month anniversary of the Russian onslaught.

The Tsars Are Often Not Amused

not amused by writers of verse

If this one wins
the Taras Schevchenkos of Ukraine
may be hiding poems in their boots again

Already the Anna Akhmatovas of Russia
cannot write of a war they must not name

like a slinky on a stair

Coiling and recoiling
twenty degrees at a leap

The robin looking at the
crocus twice to see if it was real

Unaware of war
redbuds are budding, bluebells blooming

Unaware of Covid
they smile their unmasked smiles

Not kept awake by fear all night
shining examples in the morning light

quick on his feet enough to stay alive

Slower and quicker in the Agora
