Halloweens in Dreams

Let's have a party this year
after all the trick-or-treaters
have gone home to rot their teeth
and look like this year's pumpkins

We'll sit around the light
of the candles last flickerings
and share scariest childhood dreams

I'll bring the big brown bear
that chased me every night
to the mouth of an open well
where I fell all the way to waking

And you can try to top or bottom that

Lilliputian army
wind at back in full attack

Rust-edged swords
at unarmored ankles flailing
harries me to any door that opens

every day deciding to go or stay

Until even the most coy sees the joy
is with the gone at the party on the lawn

So many fellow women and men today
down at the corner of have and have not
signs asking for a little of what we’ve got
I’m a hungry homeless vet
They repoed my Lear Jet
Remembering the words of Gandhi
I’ll give them what they really need
and wrap folding money around a bar
to fit in your hand and throw pretty far
If they don’t like granola, that’s okay
Carnivores can afford to attack a Big Mac
and the thirsty are halfway to a six pack

Death is an elastic band

The farther from God
we have stretched in our living
the bigger the slap when we let go

Gandhi shot
just says Ram, Ram and he's home

It is said in the Puranas that by chanting the name of Ram, salvation will be attained.

Two months short
of a hundred and five
she too the upward dive

You can read about her in her books
and some good hints on living yours

At an Austin church we got to touch
a shawl Gandhi gave her doctor parents
when they ministered on Himalayan slopes

Never washed you can still grok Gandhi on it

Her son Bob has a Human Potential Center
where we had a small group dinner later
and she and me washing and drying
shoulder to shoulder at the small sink after

and this may well be one
when how our neighbors vote
in theirs affects us more
than how we vote in ours

Mice in the rafters
don't get a say
in the choice of family pet
but hold their breath
to see if it be dog or cat

God is getting on
and suffering the eyesight of the old

In his youth
he could see every sparrow fall

Cataract clouded now
can hardly see an elephant
fall face-down on its tusks
or them that pulled the triggers

The widow or the orphan
or them that pulled the triggers

In his defence it must be notes
they were all dressed in camouflage
and some with faces painted orange
