Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
two roads diverged and me taking both

In waking and in sleeping
through the thicket that lies between
if-pods on dream cycles forth and back

And so much easier as winter comes

Thoreau went to Walden
to get to where we were born

There were ponds on our ranch
and sloughs aplenty and a lake

And we happy to let them be
just where and what they were

Waters neither rilled nor stilled
by the bullying of undue notice

The northern days grow short
The horses are all hairing-up

The hills pull scarf and shawl
of prairie wool, alpaca soft,
round their necks and shoulders

Winter's heading for the ranch
and woe to those not ready

When it rains in Biggar Saskatchewan
a bigger battle begins
Grass and grain sucking straws
to the slurping point
The sun trying as always to extract
far more than its fair tithe
Muddy waters swirling down drains
of gopher and badger holes
Settling through hollows of buffalo wallows
where the buffalo no longer roam
Remainders feeding underground streams
and deep raging rivers

If I put my feet or ear to the ground
I can almost understand her last poem
Almost hear the next one

the stillness of hummingbird
and motion at the heart of stone

The love that holds
and the love that allows

The soft wisdom of sheep
and meaning in moon and stars

Flouring her hands
she kneads the poem and the bread

Shapes them with centuries
of deep woman knowing

Wheat for shovelling wheat all day
and eating earned fresh from oven

Swathing

Turning for home at dusk
he takes a moment to look back in pride
at the last perfect swath among perfect swaths

Lines straight as Protestant prayer
overlapping and gold as Brunhilda's braids
floating on firm stubble cut at perfect length
to allow the prairie winds to blow above below
and dry the kernals in the holding heads
to Number 1 Northern, best wheat in the world

Tonight once more he'll fall asleep
counting loaves of bread instead of sheep

Cloud Sonnet

Al Capp had a character
in his Lil Abner comic strip
with no vowels in his name
and a rain cloud over his head

His name was Joe Btfsplk
and a good poster child for PTSD
which also has no vowels in it

A cloud our trauma is uploaded to
ever hovering and lighting striking
when atmospheric pressures change

The trick may be to learn relearn
it was supposed to be a comic strip
which wasn't meant to run forever
and better umbrellas available now

War Wounds

There are, the epigenticists say
memories that haven't gone away

What happened to
your grandma when the troops came by
is still barbed-wire wrapped around your DNA

Dreams that aren't yours
neurons firing like the war's still on
and mines set off by a word or a touch

So please be gentle with one another
and your mother and your mother's mother
