Don’t Fall Into the Emerald Lake

If this is your first trip
to the Canadian Rockies
and you have only all your life
gazed longingly at them in photos
we would suggest some basic cautions

For the first few days and maybe more
please keep a camera between you and the view

We are now back from our summer travels and excited to share what we saw along the way

There's a dog now by the dock

Like other dogs
she does not see colours well

she lives where beauty has no need

In Brazil our grandfather at about twelve
quick precise and fresh from Switzerland
leaps up and kills a venomous snake
just as it is set to strike a four year old girl
In awe and gratitude she says
I'm going to marry you when I grow up
He moves to far-away Canada
marries, has seven children, wife dies young
raises children, sells the farm, retires to Brazil
She was still there - you can guess the rest

The East is fine
for colour on the way to the barn
but by the time the chores are done it's gone

The rest of the day we watch the West

That's where the weather comes from

That's the direction the grandfathers faced
when they got this far and found
what they were looking for
or gave up
unhitched the horses
and sat down to watch the sun set

Driving south on Ontario Highway 49
there was a sign on the left pointing
to the birthplace of basketball's inventor
About a mile down a narrow road
a small wooden house on the left
In the yard a paved rectangle
a basketball hoop and some balls
There have been
great teams and dynasties
that height and talent kept me from
But here on a sunny Sunday
I played James Naismith one on one

reading in seven languages

Feeling the difference

Harsh precision of the Dutch
If you could understand the language
you would understand the poem

Russian

The power of
a shot of cold vodka
and survival on the steppes

Afrikaans

Dutch rubbed smooth
by the soft hills of Africa

Latin

Still the mother of language
singing through her children

Spanish

Music of Lorca
moving your body as you listen

French

Dark musings of Rimbaud
a shrug in every verb

English

The fish does not see water
but there was food everywhere
