The calming lakes of Bach

And on the slopes between
broad symphonies of green

On the shore
of the Athabasca
just above the rapids
a tree reaches
ever divided in aim
between water and sky

Just enough trunk
growing sideways
for two lovers
to sit safely and dream
before it also
turns its hopes upward

Along the Icefields Parkway
(prettiest road in the world)
winding from Lake Louise to Jasper
lies a glacier that feeds three oceans
(Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic)

It takes a hundred years for a snowflake falling on the top to make it to the bottom

Before a snowflake that falls today finishes its journey the glacier may be gone

On the other side of the road in spring
water falls down a long face of rock
They call it the weeping wall
it may still be there

The beaver does not bother
to stop his building long enough
to slap his tail and dive

The black bear ambles unconcerned
along the flowered motorway
across from the great glacier

You want to be, at least for a day
that mountain goat
hanging impossibly on the slope

I want to be the bighorn sheep
that just passed four feet away
the one with the biggest horns

Deep in the night the great horned owl

strokes silence with silence

If you land a small plane behind a 747

the invisible vortex from its wingtips
can toss you back into the air
or sla you hard
into the ground

the softness of its passing hangs in the air

Beyond the maps of the ancient world
There be dragons
Beyond the ways of parents and peers
There be dragons
Beyond the days of preachers and of teachers
There be dragons
Beyond where you know or have dared to go
There be dragons
A toe tip, a step, and a stride
Heart, arm and sword
steeled by the fiery breath
How sweet the dragon's meat
and the maiden's
Another mark on another map
Here be dead dragons

Chivalry Was Not Dead But Damp

It was a dark and stormy knight
that led his lame horse
through winter wet and counted out his woes

An unending drip
ran down his rusty helmet
and burned and blurred his visored eyes

He was as cross
as the frayed cross on his tunic
and swearing oaths at all the oaths he'd sworn

Damsels, damn all damsels
their gratitude had seldom lasted
beyond the ride back to the castle

Today he felt more kinship with the dragon
and would have fain laid down his sword
at the mouth of any breath-warmed cave

Deluge at the Austin Airport

Waves of rain and wind crash against the windows
planes hunker tight to tarmac while planes from away stay away

Inside, the rippling masses flow from changed gate to changed gate
seeking connection with any uniform with information on connections

Every hour brings another announcement of another hour late
until the whispered ‘canceled’ appears up on the board

Aurora Borealis

They have found Franklin's ship
a hundred years frozen in ice

Franklin and Franklin's men
cold, hungry and lead-can crazy
blinded by the glare and the glory

Maybe this is how
we should paint the ceilings of the dying
