A Train

The thing about a train
is that your feet never leave the ground

Though your toes
must curl in elfin curl
from hide of cow to wheels of steel

as you travel the rails
of others trails that lead you to your own

Churches along the Rhine look down
in dark and somber judgement
on the towns below

In Milan the stone itself is full of light
its celebration lifting you to God

The forefathers of all French waiters
built Notre Dame to their own glory

But I lit a candle there for Dan

If you had your own plane
and a bit of scoff lawlessness

You could drop down below the rim
at the far western end of the canyon
and fly most of its lobiquitous length
with the setting sun over your shoulder
lighting up the rocks all along your path

If you or anyone ever said
you'd spent too much on that plane
your mind would go back there again.

You have the soul of a bird
it's so joyful, light and fair
and now it's flying to a world
that the frightened people share

And I pray you safe
when they see you there
drawing water from mirages
for the flowers
round your castles in the air

Sunday afternoon
reading in seven languages

Feeling the difference

Harsh precision of the Dutch
If you could understand the
language
you would understand the poem

Russian
The power of
a shot of cold vodka
and survival on the steppes

Afrikaans
Dutch rubbed smooth
by the soft hills of Africa

Latin
Still the mother of language
singing through her children

Spanish
Music of Lorca
moving your body as you listen

French
Dark musings of Rimbaud
a shrug in every verb

English
The fish does not see water
but there was food everywhere

Sixty years after
the release of the film
returning again to
The River of No Return

Stepping again in a river
that you can't step in twice
sleeping again in a cabin
by the cabin where you slept

Listening again to the rapids
that run over the same rocks
and still chew at the roots
of the same bent tree

Listening for the whispers of the words
you went away without saying
the words we are all still waiting to hear

Always an emigrant, never an immigrant
one foot in each country for thirty years
more running from than running to
more neither nor than either or

Always abandoning in some way
family, friends and dependable plans
and any constancy demands

Half desperate, always in search
for new ones who will give enough
and not demand too much

I keep my Canadian in Canada
and am careful when I pack
I stow my twang at the border
and pick it up on the way back

Flying from Calgary to Toronto, Eda asks
"How come you've started to talk in a drawl?"

Just as the captain comes on the blower to say
"In order to avoid a big storm on our left
we are now flying over North Dakota"
