Missing the Mystery

Audio Recordings, Nostalgia, Personal Growth / tagged Buddhism, Christianity, Comfort, Faith, Tradition / December 29, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com
A Protestant at Catholic school
I loved the music of the Mass
and all that ancient Latin singing
and sweet smoke of censer swinging

Our family's King James Bible
remembered that the Psalms were songs
We didn't go to church for news
and there were hymns that rocked the pews

At Esalen om mani padme hum
a praising of the jewel in the lotus
and the striking of Tibetan bowl
did more than math to soothe the soul

The rational mind likes login
but you don't have to take it to church

For You

Audio Recordings, Family, Relationships / tagged Comfort, Grief, Support / December 13, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com
As long as you read this poem
I will be writing it.
Alden Nowlan - An Exchange of Gifts

Deep down I hope you know
I wrote this poem for you
even though you might have had
a different name and face and place

There was a man in the Southwest
who lived with widows in a serial way
and sometimes made them mothers again

The children have reunions
and tell stories and have a name for him
they call him "The Comforter"

A House Without A Dog

Audio Recordings / tagged Comfort, Dogs, Home, pets, Unconditional Love / December 8, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com
A house without a dog is never truly warm
no matter what the thermostat says

A house however with a dog
is like a court with no judge or jury
Everyone gets the benefit of the doubt
and an ear scrath
by the bailiff gets you out

A Hymn to Them That Write and Sing Em

Audio Recordings, Pilots / tagged Comfort, Hymns, Music / March 25, 2024 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com
As Tennessee Ernie Ford pinned on
my CAF wings on a hot Phoenix tarmac
I had a chance to thank him with this story

A caterwauling baby
with no way to calm her
til we found an ace in a sleeve
and that was his album of hymns

And like a Sweet hour of Prayer
Softly and Tenderly
he rocked her to sleep with Rock of Ages
To say that Tennessee was touched
would not describe his smile and eyes
It was if I'd pinned some wings on him

Ode to Neruda’s Socks

Audio Recordings, Poems about Poetry / tagged Comfort, Warmth / December 27, 2022 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com
This is an ode
to Pablo Neruda's socks
knitted for him by Maru Mori
with her sheepherder hands

Socks as soft as rabbits he says
and we watch as he slips them on
metaphor by metaphor simile by simile

What is good he concludes is doubly good
when it's a matter of two wooden socks in winter

What can one say but triple same
wooden socks a warm fire and one of his books

And a link to the poem that inspired this one – “Ode to My Socks” by Pablo Neruda

It Helped at the Time

Audio Recordings, Family, Remembering / tagged Comfort, Death / June 15, 2021 / by neil_2015_wordpress@neilmeili.com
Today I visited the graves of my parents
flowers for my mother
tobacco for my father
and chocolate for the orphan boy

He had a stomach ache later
but it sure helped at the time
