Winning the Three-Legged Race

On sports day at the little school
they tied two inboard legs together
and set the pair on a hobbling chase
for a colored ribbon at the end of the race

Lessons for life are taught here early

Running alone may seem swift and wise
but winning together is the sweetest prize

I have seen the lights
go on in the eyes of the young
as letters and words go from fear to fun

And you play it like life, loose or tight

Small words
you can make on your own
bigger ones need
some help from your friends

Even the ones that pose as your foes
