Lately I've been feeling so empty
and more fragile than ever before

Everything that I believed in is gone

Desperate I turn
my jagged edges to the world

Step on me
with sensitive feet you will be sorry
with lumbering boots, I will be crushed

There are wolves
everywhere and closer

Your parents are busy flailing
at the snarling snouts and dripping fangs

Busy wrapping their own and each other's bloody wounds

While you curl up, cold and lonely
in the bottom of the sleigh
thinking, I'll die if someone
doesn't pick me up and hold me soon

Thinking of the children of Ukraine on the 1st anniversary of the Russian invasion

Just coughing my way thru covid

Just reading the morning news
full of earthquakes and arrogance

Just noting that the cow
(meaning the price of beef)
has jumped over the moon
and taken the lettuce with it

Just missing to the bone
my bucket brigade of joy
who have kicked it

Just not pulling off this time
that old cure for the curse

Just not feeling any better
because others got it worse

I wake in the night
in a prison of my making
rattling the bars of might have been
and should and should not have done

Unable to escape I pace and I wait

For Buddha to melt the illusion

Or for Jesus to open the door
with sweet forgiveness

Or God to at least send along
a minor prophet with
a file in a cake
