My Uncle Shot My Dog
Between a Rock and Becoming One
The Road Less Re-travelled
If You Don’t Know Snow
CAN’T WE ALL GET ALONG
CAN’T WE ALL GET ALONG
In the Yucatan
there are little bees
who long ago
gave up stinging
Their honey
is exceedingly sweet
MY UNCLE SHOT MY DOG
MY UNCLE SHOT MY DOG
My uncle shot my dog
My ever loving, ever loyal
saved me from the coyotes
went back to the ranch to
lead my parents to me
stuck in the mud – just
like in the movies –
Lassie dog
My uncle shot my dog
Maybe she had took to bitin’ people
if she did, I’m sure they had it coming
Maybe she’d got to eatin’ the chickens
if she did, she’d earned every one
Maybe she was old and sick and hurtin’
maybe she was better off dead
than alive
I don’t remember anyone saying that
but I doubt it would’ve helped
Not when it’s your best friend
and you’re five
My uncle shot my dog
My uncle shot my dog
and went to his grave
unforgiven
Maybe I can get it done
before I go to mine
APRIL 2ND 2005
APRIL 2ND 2005
The pope died today
I heard about it on the radio
on the way to the Bahai reading
The pope died today and the pope was a poet
I know because I have one of his books
Anyway, the pope died today
and the pope was a poet
He was a good and a wise man too
who apologized to the Gypsy and the Jew
But I know he would
because the pope was a poet
And he was working yet
to get the big banks to forgive
the third world’s crippling debt
But that was no surprise
because the pope was a poet
And now as cardinals
in solemn gaggles gather
to spread portfolios for a look
I hope they look for a poetry book
