Dusk

One light comes on in the sky
one lamp on the prairie - James Wright

Lined up at the north end of the south field
hard machines made for tearing the earth
relax into softness

The newlyweds in the hired man's house
are getting a little shy again

While
just over the horizon which is becoming not one
teenagers from Mars in their little round cars
ponder a perfect night to spin a crop circle or two

Young farmer at the country dance
feeling there was nothing left to live for
with his whole crop flat-threshed by hail

Until the prettiest girl in the hall
took him outside to show it wasn't necessarily so

Next morning's pews were filled to full
with farmers praying for their crops to fail

Rest less

slightly cattywampus
on the wall
and the dragon turned aside
from his appointed task
of guarding the front door

Have not decided if they
are the most thorough ever
or walk about with sly smiles
giving all a little nudge

I run the long gauntlet
of perfume counter aisles

Reaching men's wear I dare
my first breath
since leaving the street

Take my time picking up
and fondly fondling
warm winter socks

Should I buy two pair or three
two browns and a black
or to blacks and a brown

In no hurry
to begin the return journey
so recently reminded of why
I had been driven here
in the first place

All the monarchs pollen-drunk
are weaving their way to Mexico
with a final teasing loop or two
taunting that I can't come too

Little do their little brains know
That American and Southwest
fly direct from Austin now
and I can be a week
of margaritas awaiting their arrival

Growing Younger – Greece 2000

Standing in front of the statues of the wise
noting how very wise they were
to be born at a ripe old age
and grow younger every year

Socrates for instance

certainly got it right
being born at seventy
and working backwards
to that point of light

Good Advice

Whenever anything got broke or lost
Kim's mother would say:
Don't cry over anything that can't cry over you

Which is a good thing to remember
when your life becomes a country song
and your dog and your wife and your truck are gone
Your dog will miss you right away and cry with the coyotes all the night
your wife will miss you later - maybe and cry for all the coulda's that might

buy you're sadly mistaken
if you think that old C-10 Chevy
following the repo truck down the lane
is going to miss you half as much as you miss it
