to the injured oaks

Hoping to disrupt
dreams of ice and broken limbs
and the sound of saws

Bringing newness news
in somewhere all-connected
cherry blossoms soon

Knowing that
next year
their trees

will by trying
to grow leaves

on phantom limbs

In Austin
the trees after the freeze
are either dead or in mourning

There's a dead one now
with a still-clinging trumpet vine
playing taps

Two weeks after
the once in a never before ice storm
branches are still falling from the oaks

Being branches from live oaks
the leaves which never leave are left
silvering in great piles along the streets

Hundreds of years old
Sophia shudders barer in the cold

It would take a hands-clasped minyan
chosen from the chosen ones to hug her

She looks like she needs that hug — What’s a minyan?

February of 2023
was not a good time to be a tree

Oaks old enough to be gray of hair
falling, wisdom ignored, everywhere

Let us bow our heads as they
centuries of grateful as we pray
