My sportswriter friend has Alzheimers now
and I wonder what happens
behind that bright brow

When we were kids, he was the guy
who knew each homer and pop fly
and every player's RBI

Grew up to travel with the pros
what he didn't know, why nobody knows

And now soggy-brained he tromps
through sub-sequitorial swamps
the mind once quick as a cat's
drowning among the stats

School Reunion

I went to school with supermen
all fearless and bulletproof
in hockey, football and life

They couldn’t be hurt
and if there was any doubt
take two aspirin and run it out

Today their knees lock up
a golf club swing cracks a rib
one steps wrong - his leg’s in a cast

They’re getting more human by the day
and sometimes even at night

I blame it all on the hole in the ozone
letting in more and more kryptonite

Driving south on Ontario Highway 49
there was a sign on the left pointing
to the birthplace of basketball's inventor
About a mile down a narrow road
a small wooden house on the left
In the yard a paved rectangle
a basketball hoop and some balls
There have been
great teams and dynasties
that height and talent kept me from
But here on a sunny Sunday
I played James Naismith one on one

In life there are errors
errors and regrets
and then there is baseball

The ball off the end of the glove
the errant throw, any errant throw
The running into the other fielder and the ball dropping between
The not being willing to run into the other fielder and the ball dropping between
The not tagging up at third
The easy dribble down the first base line
and knees that won't let you bend to pick
The ball that was called a strike
the strike that was called a ball
For Catholics there's Purgatory
with constant replay of regret
For baseball fans there's late October to forever

To win the world series
you need to win 4 out of 7
9 innings X 3 outs X 4 games = 108

The diameter of the sun times 108
is the distance from the sun to the earth
The diameter of the moon times 108
is the distance from the moon to the earth

The Cubs haven't won since 1908
and are about to run out
of beads to pray on and stitches to count

But nobody remembers for sure
the number of turns in the horn of the goat
