The Therapist Practices Her Art
In celebration of World Mental Health Day – wishing everyone healing, peace and joy.
MALPRACTICE
MALPRACTICE
There have always been therapists
The first one was the snake
who just suggested to Eve
that she open up a little
For six thousand years
he’s been trying to slither out
of a skin our projections
have painted him in
The second one was Eve
who many judge about as low
for passing it on to Adam
HE GOES ALONE TO COUPLES THERAPY
HE GOES ALONE TO COUPLES THERAPY
And finds that it is mostly
a matter of listening to the other
Honoring equals love, or trumps it,
or extends it, or replaces it nicely
Respect means never having
to say you’re sorry, when you’re not
and will know you’re lying anyway
Hours are fifty minutes long
the other ten a gift from God
He goes home, his feet lighter
for the shadows sown on
He is afraid people
will think that he can’t spell
and means sewn, like Peter Pan
not seeds, and seeds, and soil
150th BIRTHDAY LIMERICK
150TH BIRTHDAY LIMERICK
The Event
In October 2007 a number of Voice Dialogue teachers and friends gathered in Boulder to celebrate Hal’s 80th birthday and Sidra’s 70th birthday. I was honoured to be asked to write a theme poem, then Larry said, “But not a Limerick”.
The Limerick
There were two therapists from Thera
Who were so wise they would scare a ya
The were so darned smart
They could take you apart
And you couldn’t hide hide nor hair a ya
CHAGALL
CHAGALL
Chagall could fly in his paintings
but could not breathe in his house
If they’d had a good therapist
the world might be a poorer place
PSYCHOTHERAPY or A SIX YEAR OLD LEARNS ABOUT CLOCKS
PSYCHOTHERAPY or A SIX YEAR OLD LEARNS ABOUT CLOCKS
The difficulty
in taking things apart to see why they tick
can often be
in putting them back together again

Dorsey paints with people
dips into their hearts
where all colors
have merged
to mud

Gently
lays them out
ultraviolet to infrared
spaces between clearly seen
and hands them back the brush
